A recently renovated, spacious, traditional stone-built house in the village of Parkend in the heart of the Royal Forest of Dean.
The house is set well back from the road conveniently situated close to local facilities, including the general store and post office. There are two pubs nearby, both serving food and real ales.
The Fountain Inn is 100 metres from the house; The Woodman is 300 metres away on the other side of the cricket field. The Dean Forest Railway provides a fun outing on a standard gauge heritage railway operated by steam trains. The station is just 200 metres from the House. Trains run from Parkend to Lydney and back during the holiday season, with several stops along the way. More details are on the Dean Forest Railway web site. The RSPB Nagshead Reserve is a short walk from the house. There is a petrol station in the village.
Parkend is one of the few villages actually within the Royal Forest and has a history of involvement in mining and related industry from the nineteenth century, now all in the past. The tall, distinguished looking building next to the Post Office was originally the pumping house for the local mine, became a Forestry Commission college of forestry and is now a field studies centre. The Forestry Commission woodlands are open to visitors and provide extensive footpaths and cycle tracks. You can set off in any direction from the house and visit a different area of the Forest each time. Information about Parkend can be found on local web sites:

With a number of downstairs rooms, 1 Hazeldene is ideal for small group meetings. One delightful example is the course on Spring Fungi in the Forest of Dean.
Kerry Robinson tutors this residential course running from 14th to 21st April, 2012. Kerry is a very experienced mycologist and natural historian whose knowledge of fungi is internationally known and respected. 1 Hazeldene provides a workroom, projection facilities for talks and books on fungi for use during the course.
Looking at fungi in the spring is very different from the typical autumn foray searching for larger mushrooms and toadstools. In the spring, attention is more likely to focus on the tiny (but nonetheless intricate and beautiful) cup fungi and other species found on twigs, leaves and other material associated with plants. So, one learns about the plants as well as the fungi that associate, often very specifically, with them.
The course is ideal for those with an interest in natural history and conservation, and demonstrates the great diversity of fungal species to be found in the fields, forests and wildlife reserves of Britain. Suitable for beginners to the subject, it provides a gentle introduction to the use of the microscope with these species. Those attendees who have microscopes are encouraged to bring them.
Finds are set out on a display table, so everyone can see them, and the course also covers photographing finds and handling images on computer - a disc with some of the more interesting finds of the week is given to participants to take home for future reference.
